Billy Bean

The loss of Billy Bean, a friend and coworker who served as the Commissioner’s special assistant and senior vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion at MLB, has left all very grieved. Billy, at the age of 60, heroically battled Acute Myeloid Leukemia for a full year before his passing

Billy has dedicated his time and energy to advancing equality in the game for all players over the past ten years by working with MLB and all 30 Clubs on player education, LGBTQ inclusion, and social justice initiatives.

Who Is Billy Bean

Billy played with the Tigers, Dodgers, and Padres for ten seasons, spending six of them seasons in Major League Baseball.

Like many others, he became a Major League Baseball player and realized his lifelong dream. He had a secret, unlike other people. He was a real g*y man. It was considered unacceptable throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He maintained his secrecy until the end of his professional life.

After his career ended, he accepted his secret and joined MLB as an executive for inclusion and diversity. His efforts in Major League Baseball not only changed the culture of the game, but they also unquestionably assisted others who didn’t have to live with a secret.

The MLB Shots Fired are “saddened to hear of the loss of MLB star executive Billy Beane. Thoughts and prayers for those affected by his loss.”

He will be greatly missed by so many.
