Ed Mell Death – Passed Away: A brilliant artist Ed Mell, whose breathtaking paintings breathed life into Arizona Opera’s first world premiere of Bohmler and Kohn’s “Riders of the Purple Sage” in 2017 and again in 2020 has passed away. According to family members Ed Mell died on Friday, February 23, 2024, at the age of 82. His cause of death was natural.

Mell, who was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, has always had a strong bond with Arizona and its magnificent surroundings. His choice in 1970 to become a teacher on the Hopi Reservation only made this channeling more intense. The Colorado Plateau became an endless source of artistic inspiration for Ed Mell.

His renowned American West-themed paintings beautifully embellished every stage, adding to the opera’s plot and captivating audiences with its startling realism.

Mell completely defied traditional understanding regarding southwestern art with his abstract style to painting vivid canyons, massive storm clouds, and other unique desert vistas.

American artists are deeply saddened by the news and are extending their deepest condolences to Ed Mell’s family, friends, and especially his loving wife, Rose Marie.
