Late in the third quarter of Friday night’s high school football game between Laney and Westside, there were gunshots fired, sending players, coaches, and other on-field staff to the ground to take cover as a large number of fans fled the field.

Both football teams moved quickly toward the locker rooms as soon as the police presence arrived and the stadium was sealed down. It was announced shortly after that the rest of the game would not go on.

When the altercation occurred, Westside was leading 7–6 with 52.8 seconds left in the third quarter.

A automobile was witnessed going up and down the street directly outside Laney High School’s football station “shooting a gun in the air,” according to several Laney coaches who were on the stadium press box’s roof filming the game.

Following the second round of gunfire, spectators fled through the exits and reentered the stadium through the stands. A large group of Richmond County Police vehicles gathered in the stadium’s parking areas less than two minutes later.

There’s still more information to come.
