Russell Malone, a legendary jazz guitarist who was born in Albany, passed away at the age of 60, leaving his family and admirers in anguish. Numerous comments on social media questioned what enigmatic ailment could have killed him so suddenly.
On Friday, August 23, 2024, Martin Pizzarelli acknowledged his passing. He had suffered a heart attack while on tour in Japan with Ron Carter.
“RIP to the great Russell Malone. I only met him briefly while catching Peter Bernstein at the Village Vanguard in 2018, but I count him as one of my influences for sure. So sad to hear this and condolences to the people I know who called him a friend.”
Russell is an extremely talented, tasteful, soulful, and deep pocket guitarist. He is regarded by many as their particular favorite and one of the all-time greats.
