Lily Afshar Obituary: Dr. Lily Afshar, a brilliant classical guitarist, a dedicated professor, and a trailblazer for women in music is dead. She is the first woman to get a doctorate in classical guitar in the entire world, she passed away on Tuesday, October 24, according to family members.
Lily holds the distinction of becoming the first female winner of the Guitar Foundation of America International Soloist Competition and the first female doctorate recipient in guitar performance from an academic institution.

Lily was well-known for her beautiful, heartfelt tones. She made multiple CDs of classical and world music, exhibiting her variety and virtuosity, and she performed in numerous places. For more than 30 years, she was a guitar instructor at the University of Memphis, where she inspired and guided several students.
She possessed many terrible (and extremely complex) traits, but as they say, there is always some good mixed in. My chest aches. She developed and molded me into a musician. Her teachings taught me so much. Without Lily, I would not be in Memphis today.
Biography
Dr. Afshar was not merely a teacher and musician. She served as a humanitarian, a cultural ambassador, and an inspiration to others. She overcame several obstacles and hurdles to move to the United States as a teenager after being born in Iran.
She promoted harmony and understanding amongst cultures with her singing. She was a supporter of numerous charities and causes, including the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis, the Memphis Food Bank, and the Iranian Earthquake Relief Fund.
Numerous honors and recognitions were bestowed upon her, including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Orville H. Gibson Award for Best Female Classical Guitarist, and the Florida State University Distinguished Alumni Award.
Dr. Afshar was a hero to many and a legend in the guitar community. Her music and her spirit affected countless lives. Her loved ones, friends, coworkers, pupils, fans, and admirers will all miss her terribly.
