Macon County Fair

According to a Facebook post from around 10:10 p.m. on Friday, June 7th, the Macon County Fairgrounds board, security, and law enforcement responded to a report of a shot fired at the fair.

Because of the gravity of the situation, it was decided that all fair activity would be suspended immediately in order to ensure the safety of all fairgoers.

“What was meant to be a memorable time at the Macon County Fair, ended up being a night of chaos and seeing people get trampled…..A disappointment to our city and its residents.”

According To Macon County Fairgrounds

“Due to the serious nature of events here are the following changes for the remainder of the 2024 Macon County Fair:

  • we will be increasing law enforcement presence on the grounds
  • our carnival will begin at noon on Saturday only and will shut down at 8 pm on Saturday and Sunday, June 8th and 9th
  • patrons 17 years old and under must be accompanied by a legal guardian
  • our Southeast fair gate will be closed for the remainder of the 2024 fair”

The Macon County Fairgrounds appreciates all first responders for their promptness and professionalism. The livestock and grandstand events will continue as planned.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to call the Macon County Sheriff’s Office at 217-424-1311.

“Thank you for all you do to provide a safe environment for people of Macon County to enjoy. Your duties don’t come easily and I hope many can come to understand that you can’t control the actions of all guests, despite your best efforts. Stay safe!” Mike Wilcott said.
