Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio: On Friday, February 2, 2024, Mark Gustafson, who recently won an Oscar alongside Guillermo del Toro for their work on the Netflix stop-motion animated film, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, has died from a heart attack at the young age of 64.
Mark Gustavson was an incredible human being as well as a fantastic filmmaker. So sweet, so witty, and so skilled. a superb communicator, an excellent listener, and most importantly, his renowned dry humor.
He was referred to by Del Toro as “a pillar of stop motion animation—a true artist.” He was the puppeteer’s assistant behind the Wooden and Fox. 2010 Annie Awards with Mark and his wife, Jennifer.
“Mark’s loss will leave many shocked and saddened. Mark was an enormous talent, and his work will live on for generations. We are proud to have awarded Mark a Ray Harryhausen Award for his groundbreaking work on Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.”
In addition to the current popularity of “Pinocchio,” Mark has been involved in stop-motion animation since the middle of the 1980s, having worked on beloved films including “The Adventures of Mark Twain” (1985) and “Meet the Raisins” (1988). His credits for feature films include directing animation on Wes Anderson’s 2009 film “Fantastic Mr. Fox.” He has always been creative and inspiring.
