RIP Richard Roundtree: On Tuesday afternoon, October 24, at the age of 81, Richard Roundtree, who broke ground with his signature role in the ‘Shaft’ movie franchise, passed away. His daughter Nicole made the information public. Richard was a dear and supportive friend to so many who had the opportunity of spending time with him.

Richard died with his family by his side after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

There will only ever be one Richard Roundtree. #SHAFT. He will always be the man! What a legacy he left to this town,industry and his family. All my love to those who loved him especially @billyvera who introduced us. Beyond being a great talent in front of the camera he was also a talented photographer and knew how to give great pointers. I will cherish this photo forever.”

Biography

Born in 1942 in New Rochelle, New York, Roundtree began his acting career in blaxploitation films in the early 1970s, including Shaft. His roles as investigator John Shaft in the 1971 action film Shaft’s Big Score! (1972), Shaft in Africa (1973), and the brief Shaft TV series (1973) are what made him most famous.

For his role in the first movie, Roundtree was nominated for a Golden Globe for New Star of the Year, and he is regarded as the first Black action hero.

During a time when there were not many Black men in the public eye, Mr. Roundtree was the Black superhero that everyone needed.
