Richard Berdnik Death: The death of Richard Berdnik, a Clifton native and the 49th sheriff of Passaic County, shocked the law enforcement community in North Jersey on Tuesday, January 23. Richard took his own life in a restaurant after shooting himself. Since further information is still emerging, the reason Richard took his own life has not yet been made public.
There is a prevalent rumor that he was murdered by depression.

Richard was a wonderful man and a valuable law enforcement partner who prioritized the protection of the people living in Paterson and Passaic County. Every officer in the Paterson Police Department has the utmost sympathy for the men and women of the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office as well as the family of Sheriff Berdnik.
The untimely death of Richard left friends and family in shock and sadness! He was a guy of integrity and dignity who served Passaic County. The man who always answered the phone was Sheriff Berdnik. Though missed, his memory will live on.

The county and the whole community are very saddened by Richard’s demise, and his family is devastated by this news. Those who knew Sheriff Berdnik understood how supportive he was.
“My heart is so hurt with the news of our Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik. My condolences to his wife Monica, his children & grandchildren. Prayers go out to all who are affected by this tragedy. To all of Passaic County officers and leaders in our community. May he rest in peace.”
