Idaho County Dispatch got a call from the International Emergency Response Coordination Center on August 16, 2024, at around 1:42 PM. An SOS call had come in from a Garmin inReach gadget. While the second communication informed that the missing rider had been located alive but in poor condition, the first message did not specify whether there was an emergency.

Zachary Demoss was the missing person, according to a later Garmin communication.

The coordinates for the Lost Creek Campground were as follows: it was roughly at milepost 136 on Highway 12. Idaho County Dispatch sent Kooskia Ambulance, Lowell QRU, Life Flight, an Idaho County Deputy, and the Idaho State Police to the scene.

When they got there, Zachary was awake and aware. He had been consuming the creek’s water. Mr. Demoss was flown to St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula via Life Flight.

Thank you to everybody who assisted in the hunt for Zachary, Sheriff Ulmer says, and best wishes for his speedy recovery.
